Well, here was a new twist in the Crackpot Right Industry Goons vs Real Scientists "debate", although he was on the side of such "luminaries" like Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity, and GW Bush. www.evangelicalright.com/2007/02/falwell_global_warming_is_sata.htmlFalwell: global warming is "Satan's attempt to redirect the church's primary focus"From The Associated Press, hat tip Defcon The Reverend Jerry Falwell says global warming is "Satan's attempt to redirect the church's primary focus" from evangelism to environmentalism. Falwell told his Baptist congregation in Lynchburg yesterday that "the jury is still out" on whether humans are causing -- or could stop -- global warming. But he said some "naive Christian leaders" are being "duped" by arguments like those presented in former Vice President Al Gore's documentary "An Inconvenient Truth. Falwell says the documentary should have been titled "A Convenient Untruth." Falwell said the Bible teaches that God will maintain the Earth until Jesus returns, so Christians should be responsible environmentalists, but not what he calls ... quote ... "first-class nuts."

Jerry Falwell said global warming is much ado about nothing. "Go back 30 years and it was Global Cooling because the temperatures were lowering. This is cyclical and has been since God created the earth," Falwell said. He argues that global climate change has always been an issue. "Global temperature fluctuations are an old, old story, in which relatively brief cycles of warming and cooling recur within longer swings of cooling and warming. There is nothing we can do about this," Falwell told the Thomas Road Baptist Church congregation Sunday. On the website for Gore's film "An Inconvenient Truth" there's a very different message - it says global warming is real, all ready happening - and that it's not from natural causes. In fact, the website says the evidence is overwhelming and undeniable. Falwell doesn't buy into that science. "In spite of all the hype by liberal politicians, the liberal media and radical Hollywood, it is not yet proven that greenhouse emissions are the cause of global warming," Falwell concludes. The environment gets a nod from Hollywood, but a challenge from Central Virginia's best known religious leader.

www.desmogblog.com/climate-change-and-evangelismClimate Change and Evangelism3 Mar 07 A frightened - and frightening - rump of the evangelical community has launched an attack on the climate change consensus, suggesting that it is somehow inherently anti-human. The first volley in the most recent attack came last Monday from the Rev. Jerry Falwell - the Moral Majority founder who has done so much to reintroduce religion into American politics. Falwell, who apparently has an inside track on the devil's thoughts and tactics, said that climate change was “Satan’s attempt to redirect the church’s primary focus” from evangelism to environmentalism. By Friday, the (Right to) LifeSite was reporting on the deepening schism in the evangelical movement between those who are urging attention to climate change and those who are trying to politicize the science. While the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) has urged its members to support policies that will address climate change, the Interfaith Stewardship Alliance (ISA), led by Focus on the Family founder Dr. James Dobson, is saying that “Global warming is not a consensus issue and our love for the Creator and respect for His creation does not require us to take a position." LifeSite explains this position by saying "Environmentalist doctrine presupposes that the answer to climate concerns is the elimination of huge portions of the human population through mass abortion, sterilization programs and numerous other means." (Clearly, I'll have to go back and reread the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, because I missed the whole section on attacking humanity. I thought we were talking about energy conservation and better urban design.) In its recent letter, the ISA says, “We believe there should be room for Bible-believing evangelicals to disagree about the cause, severity and solutions to the global warming issue.” Notwithstanding that, "we are evangelicals and we care about God’s creation.” The last word on that interpretation must got to a commenter on ThinkProgress , who offered: 'A little Old Testament for Rev. Falwell: Gen. 2:15 which says, "The LORD God placed the man in the Garden of Eden as its gardener, to tend and care for it." The Hebrew word for tend can also mean "to serve" and the world care may be translated "to keep save, preserve, protect." 'That mandate has never been rescinded.'

gristmill.grist.org/story/2007/2/26/102417/442Jerry Falwell on global warming: it's a mythPosted by David Roberts at 10:24 AM on 26 Feb 2007 Joining a brain trust that boasts such members Stone Age Senator James Inhofe and TV game show host Pat Sajak, conservative Christian Reverend Jerry Falwell has spoken out on global warming, proclaiming it ... you guessed it ... a "myth." (You should really watch the linked news segment. It must be seen to be believed.) He says blah blah global cooling in the '70s blah blah natural cycle, but the best part is where he uncovers the nefarious secret agenda of the global warming crowd. To wit: Those drawing attention to global warming want to economically destroy America, because ... uh ... they just do. Moreover, they want to distract attention from the fact that the world -- the whole world! -- is morally bankrupt. Worse yet, they want to redirect the church's focus, distracting it from its core mission of hating Teh Gay. Falwell notes that the connection between CO2 and warming is "the greatest deception in the history of science" -- presumably greater than biologists' deception about evolution and geologists' deception about the age of the earth. You just can't turn your back on those lyin' scientists! PS, Falwell acknowledges he's not a scientist, but he's taken a few years to study the issue, so don't go questioning his credentials on this matter.
