news.tmcnet.com/news/2006/04/05/1542415.htm Apple Introduces Software to Run Windows XPApple Computer Inc. is introducing new software enabling Intel (News - Alert)-based Macs to run Microsoft (News - Alert) Corp.’s Windows XP operating system, reports The Associated Press. Apple (News - Alert) says its new “Boot Camp” software will be available as a download from the company’s website. The software allows users with a Microsoft Windows XP disc to install Windows XP on an Intel-based Mac computer. “Apple has no desire or plan to sell or support Windows, but many customers have expressed their interest to run Windows on Apple's superior hardware now that we use Intel processors,” The Associated Press quoted Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, as saying. A step-by-step guide is provided to help with the installation process. Boot Camp lets users choose between booting in either Mac OS X or Windows when they start their computers. A final version of Boot Camp will be available as a feature in the forthcoming Mac OS X version 10.5, aka “Leopard.”

Yes, and Apple's stock shot up $6 a share when they announced this, while Dell dropped $3 a share. There is a battle going on between Dell and Intel, with Dell threatening to go AMD. That's one of the reasons for the cozying up to Apple. I predict withinh two years, Apple will be back as the #1 seller. Whether that's good or not remains to be seen.
Actually, having XP and OSX in the same machine is pretty cool. The next step is to have multi-core Macs running OSX, XP, and Linux simultaneously, while cutting and pasting between OS's. Right now, you need an emulator like VirtualPC to do that, and the PC side runs about 5x slower than it should.

I don't know too much about Apple. From what I've read, gamers are happy about having XP run on their MAC? Mac users who liked games used to carry around two lap tops, one with OSX for work and another with XP for gaming. Now they can do both in one. Unless I understood it wrong. Is there a reason why you can't play games on a MAC?

Is there a reason why you can't play games on a MAC? Technically, games run just fine on OSX. Apple machines are used more for Audio, Video, Science, and Graphics production. The gaming authors simply write for XP, and not as much for OSX.

Isn't it because more people use Windows and it's a larger consumer market? Most viruses are programmed to invade Windows systems as well. Bill Gates used to do what Rush Limbaugh did to get his show on in so many markets. He basically gave it away for free at first.
