Researchers challenge Kennedy lone gunman theory

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Bullet analysis used to justify the lone assassin theory behind President John F. Kennedy's assassination is based on flawed evidence, according to a team of researchers including a former top FBI scientist.


Writing in the Annals of Applied Statistics, the researchers urged a reexamination of bullet fragments from the 1963 shooting in Dallas to confirm the number of bullets that struck Kennedy.

Official investigations during the 1960s concluded that Kennedy was hit by two bullets fired by Lee Harvey Oswald.

But the researchers, including former FBI lab metallurgist William Tobin, said new chemical and statistical analyses of bullets from the same batch used by Oswald suggest that more than two bullets could have struck the president.

"Evidence used to rule out a second assassin is fundamentally flawed," the researchers said in their article.

"If the assassination (bullet) fragments are derived from three or more separate bullets, then a second assassin is likely."

The Kennedy assassination set off a whirlwind of theories about who killed the 46-year-old president.

The President's Commission on the Assassination of President Kennedy, known unofficially as the Warren Commission, concluded in 1964 that Lee Harvey Oswald, acting alone, fired three shots, one of which missed the president's car. There have been many challenges to its conclusions over the years.

The House of Representatives Select Committee on Assassinations concluded that Oswald was probably part of a conspiracy that could have included a second gunman who fired but missed Kennedy.

The panel's supporting evidence was a bullet analysis that said fragments collected from the site were too similar to be from more than two slugs.

But the latest report found that many bullets from the same batch used by Oswald had a similar composition.

"Further, we found that one of the thirty bullets analyzed in our study also compositionally matched one of the fragments from the assassination," the article said.

"This finding means that the bullet fragments from the assassination that match could have come from three or more separate bullets."

If the polls ( this is from memory, so I can't address the numbers), that I have heard are any where near correct, most Americans do not believe the "lone gunman" theory of this killing.
That is , the handful that are paying attention to the so-called "history" of the events, which have been neatly arranged so as to confirm the myth that bad guys are always on the prowl, and that "these things happen"
I remember the conflicting reports of the type of weapon used on that day, and that was my first confirmation that this was a set-up of some kind. Later on my commie Granpa and I talked about how Jackie had to have been told to keep her mouth shut, as it was for the best interests of the country, yadayadayada...
My CT addled mind now subscribes to the theory that the evils done by the elites are now going to be exposed,(9-11, COINTELPRO,etc.) so as to make the dismantling of this system acceptable to the mob, as they will be fed up with the "corruption" which has "changed" this country from fantasyland to corporateland.
With a new direction of "global justice" or some such crap, the potential for justice which does exist in the Constitution will be thrown out, and a new system of "liberty" will be foisted on the mob.

With Johnson being in the "Dealy Shooting Gallery Mix" Democrats were always present. During the 60s, as I know you remember very well, LBJ was as hated as Nixon.

I think The Moment was when Oswald was shot by Ruby, and everyone stood around. I saw this live on TV.

What you say about the System being "dismantled", and replaced, we are witnessing that right now. Pro-Invasion Democrats calling themselves for Peace, and people getting beat up at Hillary speeches that protest her AIPAC masters. This so-called "New World Order" is essentially designed to create tension and eliminate the middle class. With all of this attacking Hippies and Environmentalists, it could be that there are Elites infiltrating every aspect of Old Time progressive causes, such as how DailyKos forbids talk about 9/11 other than what the Bush administration says. I don't throw out the baby with the bath water however. I still think that Peace means no violence, Environmentalism means caring for nature, Woman and Gays have the same rights as everyone else, and Israel should not run US foreign policy.
