Bowie recovering after emergency heart surgeryBy James Burleigh 09 July 2004The music legend David Bowie has had an emergency heart operation. Bowie fell ill after a concert in Germany last month and underwent an angioplasty procedure to treat "an acutely blocked artery", his spokesman said. "He is at home in New York convalescing with his wife and daughter." On 23 June, Bowie, 57, cut short a gig in Prague because of shoulder pain. Two days later, he appeared at the Hurricane Festival in Scheessel, north-west Germany, but later complained of being unwell. He was kept in hospital overnight. Following the treatment, Bowie had to cancel the remaining dates on his European tour on doctors' advice. The singer pulled out of his headline appearance at Scotland's T in the Park festival, which takes place tomorrow. He also pulled out of playing the main stage at the Oxegen festival in Co Kildare on Sunday. A statement on his website, which first appeared at the end of June, blamed the decision on "continuing pain and extreme discomfort from a trapped/ pinched nerve in his shoulder". Bowie recently came 45th in a Q magazine list of the 100 most influential people in the music business. news.independent.co.uk/uk/media/story.jsp?story=539483
